World Speaks, March 2026: We need community interpreters more than ever!

Hi Reader,

If you follow World Speaks – or any of our team members – on social media, you’ve probably seen posts like this:

“World Speaks is looking for Vietnamese translators and interpreters! If you know someone, send them our way!”

“World Speaks is looking for Korean translators and interpreters! Please share with your network.”

“We’re looking for more ASL interpreters! Please pass this message along if you know someone!”

Here’s what these posts don’t tell you: the need for interpreters and translators is growing.

Over the last decade, Nebraska nonprofits, civic organizations, and businesses have expanded or incorporated language access into their programs, leading to more interpretation and translation requests and more opportunities for people in our community to access services in their own language.

Because of this growth, we need more interpreters and translators to help us meet the language access needs of our friends and neighbors.

That’s where our new Community Interpreter Course: Foundations of Community Interpreting comes in. Launched in 2025, the course helps multilingual people across Omaha learn how to become interpreters.

While it’s common for multilingual people to interpret for friends and family on the fly, the course takes them beyond informal interpreting and into the world of professional interpretation skills. Participants learn common interpretation techniques, professional ethics, and the framework of language justice. This gives them their first steps toward a meaningful career as a community interpreter.

Our next training is in the works for this summer & fall! If you’d like to give us input for when our future trainings happen, take our survey by clicking the button below.

Language Access in Action

When we say that the need for Language Access is growing, we mean it! Shout-out to We Make Omaha's “Health x Place” event for providing interpreters through World Speaks in both ASL and Spanish!

“Health x Place” examined how neighborhoods shape people’s health in ways they may not see, from sidewalks to healthcare access and beyond. Ensuring that language access is part of their event planning is another way we can shape the well-being and health of everyone in our community! Thanks, We Make Omaha!

Target: Last Chance before voting ends!

There is only ONE more week to vote for us in the Target Circle program! Thanks to your help, we’ve got 9,000+ votes already in the Target Circle program – if you can, please help us make it just a bit further!

Target Circle is Target’s free loyalty program where members earn votes with their purchases and can direct those votes to local nonprofits. The votes help decide how Target donates funds to support community-focused organizations – just like World Speaks!

Voting is open through March 31 on the Target app and website. If you have the Target App, you can vote!

Language Access Learning

In February, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights unanimously approved a new report examining how well federal agencies and federally funded organizations are providing language access services to people with limited English proficiency (LEP). Limited English Proficiency (“LEP”) has been used since 2000, and it means individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and who are limited in their ability to read, speak, write, or understand English.

The bipartisan report found that 26 million Americans have Limited English proficiency and many face significant barriers to essential government services and healthcare due to language barriers.

The full report — including formal findings and policy recommendations — will be released in May 2026. To find a summary of the report, visit: LINK.

World Speaks Team News

The World Speaks team has been busy in Quarter 1! Here’s a quick look at some things the team has been up to:

Ivan, our Interpretation and Linguistic Strategist, welcomed a baby boy at the end of February! We’re so thrilled for him – and he’ll be on parental leave until April 24 (he’ll be back in the office on April 27)! If you need help with Translation, contact Paulina at paulinacg@worldspeaksomaha.org. For help with Interpretation, contact Amber at amberc@worldspeaksomaha.org.

Amber, the newest member of the World Speaks team, recently helped highlight World Speaks at the UNO World Language Celebration with our volunteer Alex! It was a great time talking to students about World Speaks and what we do. We even got to say hello to Maverick!

Paulina presented Language Access and World Speaks to Learning for All, sharing about our interpreter program with their advanced English students!
